In February of 2014 we found out we were expecting our first child. Our pregnancy was going great (except for the awful morning sickness) Things we're going good and I was starting to get bigger. And with summer and the heat it was sometimes not fun. My feet had started to show some swelling (they were insanely big) there was also a couple morning my face was pretty swollen and puffy. At the time we didn't know this was a sign for pre-eclampsia. At 29 weeks I had gained 10lbs since my last appointment, but my blood pressure was fine. They told us to monitor my bp at home and call if the top number got to 140. On Friday I didn't feel 100% and knew something was wrong. We took my bp and talked to the doctor. They wanted me to meet them at the hospital. At the end of my 29th week of pregnancy they transferred me to another hospital an hour away from home that had a level 3 NICU. From there we met doctors and we were given a tour of the NICU. I was on lots of meds to keep my blood pressure down and lots of monitoring. At 30 weeks 1 day I had a seizure due to my high blood pressure. Samuel was born via emergency c-section at 6:05pm. Samuel was in the NICU for 8 weeks 2 days. We walked away with some emotional scars and my c-section scar. But we know all too well we could have not even walked out of that hospital together. We walk and raise money and awareness for pre-eclampsia because we know how important it is to walk out of a hospital after having a baby with both mom and dad and baby in hand.
