I'm racing for Dophine!
Dophine is from a village called Kiani. When she was in the 4th grade, her father died and her mother suddenly had to provide for the whole family. Dophine’s mom turned to selling bananas in the market, and Dophine and her siblings would skip school to help their mom sell more. Even with all their hard work, they sometimes came home unsuccessful. After school, it was Dophine’s job to fetch water. She walked 5 km (3 miles) to get water and arrived home well after dark. Because they didn’t have electricity in their house, Dophine wasn’t able to do her homework after sundown. She was often hungry and stressed at school. When she confided in her teachers, however, they gave her their own food to eat. Incredibly, Dophine excelled academically and in her extracurricular activities. She was head girl at her primary school and scored high on her 8th grade exams. She is so grateful to Daraja for giving her the chance to continue her education, and someday she wants to go to medical school to become a surgeon. Right now her favorite subject is math, and she enjoys singing and theater.
