I'm racing for Maria!
Maria is from Laikipia. Her family raises a few goats, and her father also works at a nearby factory. Their home is in a simple, traditional style with a cow dung floor and a thatch roof. She is the oldest of 4, and as the oldest she was responsible for much of the chores at home. One of her chores was fetching water from the river just over a mile away. When the river is dry, the community has no water; and when the river is overly full, they can’t cross it to get to places like school. Maria enjoyed primary school but was often told to go home, sometimes even chased away, because she couldn’t afford school fees. She said that it’s painful to see other people learning when you’re not. She is so grateful for Daraja and the great education she’s receiving now. Her favorite thing about Daraja is the love and unity on campus. She enjoys science class and someday wants to be a nurse.
