I'm racing for Doreen!
Doreen is from Nyandarua county where her family lives off of their small farm. Doreen’s tasks include milking and herding the goats, fetching firewood and cooking dinner, and carrying gallons of water daily from the river. Doreen’s family has no money for luxuries, and educating a girl was beyond what her parents could afford. Culturally, it made a lot more sense to educate their sons, so they sacrificed to make sure the boys could go to high school one by one. Doreen was left without a chance of going to school until she found her way to Daraja. Now she says that she wants to help change her community’s attitude and fight for equal education for all. The hardest thing Doreen has experienced was losing her closest brother to suicide. The entire family was devastated and confused. It’s taken a lot of work for Doreen to find a way to heal from the experience. One thing Doreen knows always brings her joy is service. She is a leader in the scouting program and when she goes home on breaks, she carries water for the widows in her village.
