About this Fundraiser:

R.A.C.E. CLT, a collective of anti-racist advocates that works to create a more equitable community, is raising funds to forgive $1.5 million of medical debt in 5 counties in North Carolina and 4 counties within the Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. Because others have worked to eliminate the eligible debt in our home city of Charlotte, we are building on that effort by expanding to other regions. In keeping with the organization’s mission, these counties have large Black and Indigenous populations and high rates of people experiencing poverty.

Why these communities?

The burden of medical debt falls heaviest on Communities of Color.

  • Older African Americans are 2.5 times more likely to experience medical debt problems than Whites
  • One in three Black Americans are past-due paying a medical bill
  • Almost a quarter of Native Americans and a fifth of the Latinx population are uninsured, which increases the likelihood of incurring medical debt
  • Medical debt is a major factor contributing to homelessness, particularly for our Black, Indigenous and Latinx brothers and sisters

As the COVID-19 crisis disproportionately affects these communities, these disparities will no doubt increase.

Your small (or large!) donation can make an incredible impact on the lives of our neighbors in these regions. When debt relief recipients open the yellow envelope from RIP Medical Debt, they are told that their debt has been bought by a third party and erased with no strings attached. They owe nothing on the debt and face no tax penalty.

A recent beneficiary wrote this about RIP:

“I read my letter over a few times to make sure it was the real thing. Receiving this debt relief renewed my faith that I can get back on track. It jump-started it – that we can do this – I can get back in the game! It’s unheard of what RIP does, and it’s a game changer in the medical world. It’s a game changer for me.”

Who Is RIP Medical Debt?

RIP Medical Debt uses donations to purchase bundled medical debt portfolios that have gone through collection agencies for months or years. Using third-party credit data providers, it targets debt incurred by people facing financial hardship, and then forgives it. On average, $1 is leveraged to abolish $100 in medical debt.
