What St. John Center Means to Me
In 2017 I joined the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness at the onset of the hepatitis A outbreak in Kentucky. Similar outbreaks had occurred throughout the U.S. and had impacted the homeless population significantly in those locations. I first visited the St. John Center in an effort to help the staff and clients get a hepatitis A vaccine. What I found when I got there was a home for the homeless men in the Louisville community. I was met by group of cheerful volunteers and dedicated and caring staff members. I met a group of men who were at St. John Center to get a break from the cold and windy weather--a cup of coffee, some snacks, and just a place to be able to rest and recharge for however long they stayed.
Through the past few years, I have continued to keep in touch with the staff at the St. John Center, learning more about the important services they provide. With rising homelessness due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the complexities this has brought to their work, these services are even more essential now than ever before.
