But transformative new options are emerging.

I’m thrilled to be participating as a 2025 Red & White Ball Champion.

 Through the Red & White Ball, The Blood & Tissue Center Foundation has worked for more than 20 years to help support the fight against cancer and other chronic and life-threatening conditions. Red & White Ball Champions before me have helped fund equipment and programs crucial to helping patients fight cancer and other diseases.

I'm proud to carry on this cause and help The Blood & Tissue Center Foundation take the next step.

Cell and gene therapies are transforming the treatment of cancer and other conditions, offering hope to patients suffering from previously incurable diseases. These groundbreaking treatments start with one thing—human cells, collected from the blood of patients or donors.  

But there’s a problem: 

• Few centers are accredited and equipped to collect these cells. 

• San Antonio trails other major Texas cities in access to cell and gene therapies. 

• Many patients must travel for hours – or miss out entirely on the lifesaving options. 

The lack of infrastructure also limits access to clinical trials for advanced therapies. This means less than 10% of patients in oncology clinical trials are Latino – a gap we must close. 

In 2024, South Texas Blood & Tissue’s nonprofit parent, BioBridge Global, established BBG Advanced Therapies to support new cell and gene therapies and to advance research. 

In 2025, they are launching the first ever mobile leukapheresis (cell collection) center to increase our capacity to support patient treatment and research. When fully operational, it will serve 400 patients and donors a year, as well as carry equipment to test and preserve cells. 

This year’s Red & White Ball will help fund a second mobile cell collection center, to improve access to lifesaving cell therapies for patients in San Antonio and across South Texas.
