I'm running with Asha!
Asha is from Moyale and is the 2nd of 8 children. In her village, girls were often seen as inferior, an attitude that Asha wants to help change. Her village also sits 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the nearest water source. Because her family was in such dire economic circumstances, Asha’s parents tried to marry her off 3 different times starting when Asha was in 6th grade. Each time, Asha got help from extended family who supported her resistance. The head teacher at her primary school found out about Daraja and helped Asha apply. She is thinking about becoming a teacher someday, so she can help other girls the way she was helped—she wants to be an ambassador of girls education. In the meantime, Asha’s favorite subject is math. She enjoys reading and playing volleyball, and she loves a good adventure. Her advice to girls is that even when you pass through difficulties, never give up.
