Irene is from Lukusero, a village where the nearest water source is over 3 miles away. She is the 2nd of 3 children and grew up being raised by a single mom. Irene’s mother struggled to put food on the table and would walk from farm to farm looking for any day labor she could get hired to do. When Irene graduated from primary school, she begged her mother to pay her high school fees; but with three children who were barely getting enough to eat, there just wasn’t any money for more school until Irene received her scholarship to Daraja. Irene loves Daraja and feels like everyone there is part of a large family. Her favorite subject is math because it is the subject she’s had to work hardest in and is proud of her success. In her free time, she enjoys reading and exploring campus. Someday, she would like to become a surgeon, open a children’s home, and improve the circumstances of her family.
