Dophine is from a village called Kiani. When she was in the 4th grade, her father died and her mother suddenly had to provide for the whole family. Dophine’s mom now sells bananas in the market and sometimes Dophine and her siblings will skip school to help their mom sell more. Even with all their hard work, they sometimes came home empty handed. After school, it is Dophine’s job to fetch water. She walks 5 km (3 miles) to get water and arrives at home very late. Because they don’t have electricity in their house and often can’t afford the kerosene for lamps, Dophine wasn’t able to do her homework after sundown. She was often hungry and stressed at school, but when she confided in her teachers, they gave her their own food to eat. Dophine excelled academically and in her extracurricular activities. She was head girl at her school and scored high on her 8th grade exams. She is so grateful to Daraja for giving her the chance to continue her education, and someday she wants to go to medical school to become a surgeon. Right now her favorite subject is math, and she enjoys singing and theater.
