I'm running with Esther!
Esther is from Samburu County in a village called Suguta. Esther is a devout Christian and has two siblings. When she completed primary school, Esther and her father negotiated an agreement–if Esther got circumcised, he would pay for her high school fees. Eager to obtain a secondary education, Esther agreed. After suffering through the physical and emotional pain of circumcision, Esther’s father broke his agreement. Instead of paying for her high school education, he began negotiations for Esther’s marriage. At that point, Esther chose to run away. Her male primary school teacher helped her overcome this trauma and introduced her to Daraja Academy. Esther is a remarkable student filled with hope and dreams for her future. Esther wants to become a doctor when she grows up. She wants to work in a hospital and provide equal and quality treatment to all patients. She says, “My vision is to get a good job and never give up on my dreams.”
