In the summer of 2001, our family joined a group we never dreamed we would belong to: those who know first-hand the devastating effect lung cancer has on patients and their loved ones.

Our unexpected entry into the lung cancer world began when our beautiful and healthy Deloris, a 53-year-old lifelong never-smoker, was blindsided with a diagnosis of stage III-A adenocarcinoma. In quiet warrior form, however, she fought to control her cancer through multiple surgeries, chemotherapies, radiation, and a clinical trial. Sadly, Deloris's fight ended after only fourteen months. But the battle goes on for those who loved her. 

Inspired by her memory, we continue to advocate for lung cancer awareness and increased funding for innovative research to improve patients' quality of life. In the twenty years since Deloris’s death, the scientific understanding of lung cancer has grown exponentially, so much so that the protocols for imaging, diagnosing, staging, and treatment today are vastly different than they used to be, with overall 5-year survival rates increasing from about 13% to 23%.

While this is a big step in the right direction, much more must be done to find a cure for lung cancer. That’s why we’re supporting Lung Cancer Connection and its vital work to build a community of action, advocacy, and hope for patients and their families in St. Louis.
