Ellen's WP Fundraiser
I'm fundraising for The Williams Project because theatre artists create meaning in my life, and in my community. My life's work is to make sure artists have the resources they need to keep doing theirs.
Paying artists living wages is last on the list of budget priorities in American Theatre, and has been for a while. Just one data point - did you know that Leslie Odom Jr. was paid $400 per week during the extension of Hamilton at The Public - with the Broadway transfer already lined up? That's ridiculous. And it's the same up and down the field, at institutions of every size. Let's change that paradigm.
The COVID-19 pandemic has proven what we already knew - the theatre industry can't survive if its artists can't stay, and thrive. We have to start prioritizing fair wages, so that we build healthy theatre ecosystems. The Williams Project is the only theatre company in Seattle, and one of very few nationally, with a living wage mission. Together, we'll show that it's possible to make artistically ambitious, big-hearted, professional theatre, with fair wage values.
Thank you!
