CHD is the most common birth defect, and no two heart journeys are the same. My son was born with multiple complex congenital heart conditions, and sharing his story helps educate, spread awareness, and honor the strength of CHD warriors.
He was diagnosed with dextrocardia, meaning his heart is located on the right side of his chest instead of the left. He also has double inlet left ventricle, where both upper chambers connect to one main pumping chamber, causing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix. With double outlet right ventricle, both major arteries come from the right ventricle instead of one from each side. He also has a large ventricular septal defect (VSD) a hole between the lower chambers of the heart that affects how efficiently blood circulates.
In addition, he has heterotaxy syndrome, a rare condition where the organs are arranged abnormally along the left-right axis. In his case, this includes situs inversus, where his organs are mirrored from their typical positions.
Because of the severity of his heart defects, he has already undergone two open-heart surgeries. At just 3 months old, he had his first surgery: pulmonary artery banding, a procedure that places a band around the pulmonary artery to control blood flow to the lungs and protect them from damage while allowing time for growth before further surgery.
His second surgery was the Rastelli procedure, a complex operation that redirects blood flow so oxygen-rich blood can reach the body more effectively, helping improve circulation and heart function.

With the faith of his doctor, the courage of his surgeon, the love of our family and the grace of GOD, Aizen is able to run and play, and celebrate more birthdays.
