Two children die each day from drowning in the United States, and it is the leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 4. While drowning can affect all children, it disproportionately affects minority communities, with 60% of African American and 48% of Hispanic/Latino children being unable to swim.
Many of these deaths are preventable by providing access to programs that teach basic water safety skills – programs like the Y’s Safety Around Water.
On June 1, 2019, La Crosse Area Family YMCA member Bryan Erdmann will be competing in the 43rd annual 12.5 mile swim race around Key West. In doing so, he is trying to raise awareness and gifts to send 200 kids through swim lessons here at the Y.
