Paddle Out for SBMM!

Rooted in surf culture, the experience of paddling out is often contemplative – a circle is formed amongst the paddlers, symbolic of the ocean bringing people together while honoring an individual. 

For SBMM, paddling out is a celebration of the museum’s commitment to the connections we all share with our oceans and the underwater world. It is an opportunity to bring the community together as we work to preserve and steward Santa Barbara’s natural environment and rich maritime history.

SBMM makes a big impact throughout the county. I believe in the mission of the museum and support its good work. I hope you will, too!

The museum touches so many lives whether guests viewing the exhibitions or attending events, or the many youth participating in the diverse educational offerings. As one junior high school teacher stated "Some highlights students shared included seeing parts of Santa Barbara from the water, being on a boat in the rain, and using tools. It was great to see the program in action and I’m so grateful that our students were able to have this experience today." 

An elementary school principal shared similar thoughts by saying “Living in Carpinteria provides such great opportunities for children to learn from the environment. When they learn to care about the littlest living things this carries over into a true consideration for everything.” 

Additionally, a local fourth and fifth grade teacher shared “The Maritime on the Move classes provide hands-on experiential experiences allowing students to become knowledgeable advocates, ambassadors, and protectors of their community. The connections between humans and the mountain and sea allow these young scientists to internalize that we are all connected by science, nature, and heart.”

Funds raised allow the museum to do its good work even better, showcasing exciting exhibitions, providing diverse educational opportunities, and building community through gatherings and events – all while highlighting 13,000 years of maritime history – from Chumash culture to today’s surfing and environmental movements.
