About Our Event

Making Strides for Special Kids is a 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1 Mile Sprint to raise funds for the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL), a cooperative educational system working with school districts throughout the county to serve students facing physical, emotional, and other learning challenges. The funding SEDOL Foundation hopes to raise through the 12th annual Making Strides for Special Kids event is used to directly enrich the educational, vocational, and social opportunities for children with disabilities in Lake County.

We will continue to have a virtual component to the event, in addition to holding the live event at Independence Grove in Libertyville. One of the features at the live event is for capable/handicapable pairs to team up: capable runners and walkers partner with special needs runners/walkers/wheelchair participants to experience an actual ‘race’. For many of SEDOL’s most special kids, this event is one of the few opportunities for students and their families to participate in this type of an experience and one that they look forward to each year.  We are excited to offer both an in-person and a virtual format to allow all of our participants the flexibility to complete their race on their own terms and time and from anywhere in the world.

Our students and their families continue to face significant challenges in 2023. Technology needs, specialized learning equipment and services, and even food have created unmet needs for many students that are nothing short of unimaginable. Our SEDOL families’ needs continue to be greater than they’ve ever been, and we need your help more than ever.

Please join us for this wonderful event. You can join on your own, or even better, start a team and recruit your friends! Your power to make a difference in the lives of our special needs children is significant. As a fundraiser and/or team leader you can even designate where your money goes. For example, you can choose for the funds you raise to go toward adaptive equipment (voice output devices, adaptive trikes, etc.), a backpack program for children in need of food on weekends, camp scholarships, emergency funds for families, or a number of other specific projects.
