Our family has been touched by PANDAS. PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. Much like Rheumatic Fever, where strep anitbodies continue to attack the heart after a strep infection, in PANDAS the strep antibodies continue to attack the basal ganglia of the brain causing brain inflammation and a spectrum of symptoms. We were blessed that our pediatrician was very familiar with PANDAS and started treatment right away. While treatment was started immediately, the effects still linger until the inflammation subsides. This can take months or years as with Rheumatic Fever. Treatment is a marathon not a sprint.
While our son's prognosis is good and he is now doing well, many children are misdiagnosed and don't receive appropriate treatment. This PANDAS Awareness Walk and fundraiser is to spread awareness within the state of Georgia and the SouthEast region of the United States by educating lawmakers, insurance companies, and pediatricians.
Would you please support this cause that is near and dear to our family?
