Watch Bobby's Duke friends talk about starting the Shave & Buzz, and why it matters to the community.
Why I'm Shaving ...
Thousands of people across the globe lose their hair everyday from the harsh side effects of cancer treatments in hopes they will be cured. People look at them funny, children may point and laugh. Bobby lost his hair and his fraternity brothers shaved their heads in solidarity. I lost my hair when I went through my radiation treatments. My mom is praying to keep her hair as she goes through this stage of breast cancer treatments, but as far as I'm concerned it's just hair and it will grow back! I will stand with all fighting cancer who know the stigma that comes with hair loss.
Why I'm Fundraising ...
Most of you probably know I was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017, which is the same year brain cancer took Bobby Menges from his friends and family at the young age of 19. Although I didn't know Bobby, I had the pleasure of getting to know his father, Peter, who was affectionately nicknamed "Indy", last summer when he volunteered on a First Descents rock climbing trip that I was on. From everything Peter told me, Bobby and I had a lot in common, not just our diagnoses, but a love of sports and music and a determination not to let cancer stand in our way. Bobby volunteered at Camp Kesem for kids who have a parent with cancer, he started blood drives in his community, he started his own non-profit, all while remaining positive and bringing a smile to everyone he met. It was very evident that Peter was so proud of everything Bobby accomplished in his short life. That's why I'm proud to support this charity and I ask you to join me if you can. The money raised here is a small way of keeping Bobby's spirit alive and will be used to support other Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) diagnosed with cancer and life threatening diseases.
