About Sitar Arts Center
Sitar Arts Center is a safe space and nurturing community where DC students, from birth through young adulthood, learn and build skills in art, music, dance, theater, and digital media. Sitar’s evidence-based programs put affordability and equity first. We prioritize families who have been marginalized by the high cost of arts training and systemic barriers to afterschool and summer opportunities. A minimum of 80% of students are from households with low-income and 84% are Black, Hispanic, Latinx, or Multi-racial.
Since opening in 2000, Sitar has been recognized locally and nationally:
Annually named “One of the Best” Charities in the Greater Washington region by the Catalogue for Philanthropy since 2003
2017 Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Arts Education
2015 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management
2009 National Arts and Humanities Youth Programs Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts
