Sitar Arts Center is a safe space and nurturing community where DC students, from birth through young adulthood, learn and build skills in art, music, dance, theater, and digital media. Sitar’s evidence-based programs put affordability and equity first. We prioritize families who have been marginalized by the high cost of arts training and systemic barriers to afterschool and summer opportunities. A minimum of 80% of students are from households with low-income and 84% are Black, Hispanic, Latinx, or Multi-racial.
Since opening in 2000, Sitar has been recognized locally and nationally:
- Annually named “One of the Best” Charities in the Greater Washington region by the Catalogue for Philanthropy since 2003
- 2017 Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Arts Education
- 2015 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management
- 2009 National Arts and Humanities Youth Programs Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts
