Why We're Walking
Eric was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) as a baby, and from the very beginning, NF shaped his life in ways both visible and unseen. He faced countless medical challenges, including a stroke-like event in his twenties that required him to relearn how to walk and adapt to a persistent neurological tremor. Daily life meant managing uncertainty, medical appointments, and physical limitations yet Eric refused to let NF define him. He graduated from college, built a meaningful career in operations and design, found love, and married his wife, Sabrina. His neuro-oncology team later shared that NF1 was likely a primary factor in the development and mutation of the brain cancer he battled so courageously before passing away in May 2024 at just 38 years old.
What we want people to know about NF is that it is far more than a diagnosis - it is unpredictable, complex, and often misunderstood. It impacts families emotionally, physically, and financially, even when strength and resilience are outwardly visible. Eric and his wife actively participated in NF community groups on both the East and West Coasts, seeking connection and sharing knowledge with other NF families. That sense of community mattered deeply to him. Organizations like NF Northeast create vital spaces for education, advocacy, and support and that connection is something no family facing NF should ever have to navigate without.
Eric particularly enjoyed interacting with children who’d been diagnosed with NF and their families. He felt strongly that his experience was one that could give them a sense of hope. That they too could grow up and live out their dreams, fall in love and build meaningful lives. In all of his various appointments, he would inform his doctors that he was happy to be filmed for educational purposes. Always a loving teacher, Eric wanted his journey to be thoroughly documented, so that the research community that may not have a solution for him today could work towards cures that could help a child someday in the future.
