Why We're Walking

My name is Ruthann Lombardi, and I’ll be turning 60 on May 21, 2026. My NF journey began when I was just eight years old, when tumors started developing on my head and the right side of my face. I was officially diagnosed with NF at age 12, and my first surgery came at 16. Since then, I’ve had 18 surgeries on the right side of my face alone. In 2024, I underwent my 19th, and I know there will be more ahead.

Even with everything NF has brought into my life, I refuse to let it define my spirit. I’m a woman of faith, and that strength keeps me moving forward every day.

To anyone reading this who needs encouragement: you’ve got this. NF is a complicated, unpredictable disease — but none of us face it alone. I’ll encourage you “to the moon and back,” because we are stronger together.

I stay active and involved because helping others gives me purpose. I volunteer in several places, I crochet, I listen to audiobooks, and I love connecting with people — whether they’re here in Rhode Island or anywhere across the country.

That’s why I walk. To raise awareness. To support others living with NF. To show that even after decades of surgeries and challenges, hope and community carry us forward.

And I’m always hoping to make more friends along the way.
