The Down Syndrome Association of Maryland's Mission
We empower individuals with Down syndrome and their communities through education, resources, outreach and advocacy. We are committed to amplifying our collective voices and broader needs to drive meaningful change.
How do we accomplish our mission?
We work hard to deliver programs and initiatives that center Connection, Community, and Advocacy:
- Provide Connection for families to professional and therapeutic services
- Build Community between groups of new and existing friends
- Participate in Advocacy for the broader Down syndrome community in Maryland and beyond
Why support DSAmd?
Maryland families face fragmented systems, gaps in service access, and social barriers. DSAmd is uniquely positioned to respond quickly to these challenges — but we need your support to continue and expand our work.
The Need
• Over 800 Maryland families are connected with DSAmd for support.
• In 2024, closure of the Loyola speech clinic left dozens of families without therapy — DSAmd stepped in.
• Service gaps remain in speech therapy, early intervention, inclusive education, and adult life skills.
• Without DSAmd, families face isolation, delays, and lost opportunities during critical developmental windows.
Key Programs and Support
•Central Maryland Speech Therapy Program (CMSTP): 45 clients served, $45,000 in care, 4 SLP externs trained
• First Call for New Parents: Mentorship and resources for new families
•Advocacy & Awareness: 2,200+ students reached in 2024 with inclusion kits
•Education & Workshops: IEP, nutrition, and DDA training sessions
•Social & Enrichment: Improvaneer, Down to Box, and peer connection
Urgency — Why Now?
• Families cannot wait: children risk regression without timely therapy.
• Demand is rising — more families are seeking services each year.
• Policy changes and funding cuts threaten critical supports.
• With your help, DSAmd can expand CMSTP, sustain First Call, and grow community programs into underserved counties
