Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. In fact, blood loss is responsible for 35 percent of all pre-hospital deaths. In addition, 4 out of 5 victims of a mass casualty are delivered to the hospital by someone other than a trained EMT, first responder, or ambulance.
“Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide campaign to empower individuals, with training and access to bleeding control kits, to act quickly to save lives. No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. You can be an active participant in saving the life of a friend, a co-worker, a family member or a stranger.
From isolated injuries from a power tool, to a large-scale emergency in a public space, Stop the Bleed Kits can be used to save lives.
Recent nationwide events have reemphasized the need to remain vigilant and prepared, and the introduction of Stop the Bleed kits on campus is one of many ongoing efforts for Millersville University to do just that.
