Nic lived a wonderful life, he knew how to have a good time and find joy in the moment. He was an excellent husband, father, son and friend. He always put others first and gave a voice to the underdog. He had a quick wit and a smile that could brighten any room. He was incredibly intelligent and knew more trivia than anyone ever needed to know.

Nic was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) 3 weeks prior to his passing, he only had symptoms serious enough to see a doctor for 3 weeks prior to his diagnosis. How does an incredibly fit and healthy, marathon running, century riding, kale and black bean smoothie eating, 48 year old end up with CJD? The best answer they can give me right now is Bad Luck. I am hoping to change that by supporting research to know more about this disease.

We were lucky to have a large network of caring people who stepped in to help so that we could focus all our energy on Nic. What we didn’t have was a treatment to help him, there is no treatment for this disease or way to slow its progression in any way. 

The first time I heard of CJD was while Nic was in the hospital, his doctors suggested what seemed to be a new list of possibilities each time they walked in the door. I googled CJD and even though most of the symptoms fit, I saw the odds of him having this disease were 1 in a million and closed the page. Things with these odds happen to other people, not us. Obviously, I was wrong. If this can happen to us, it can happen to someone you love too. That is why I am asking for your help in raising money to benefit The CJD Foundation. Proceeds from this event will benefit families in need of support and research, among other things.

The end of our story came about 40 years early when Nic crossed his final finish line on 8/7/20. Please donate so that others can have a chance for a different ending to their story.
