More for LES

Please donate and raise awareness to help find a cure for CJD. Every litle bit counts. We will be having a virtual hike/walk/run in honor of Les beginning immediately and culminating with a celebration of life on 9/28/24. We will have a FB page "More for Les" where you can get updates and post pics of your walk. Paricipants who register before August 14th will get a t-shirt and if we raise $1,000 by August 4th we will get our team name on it!!

My Dad lived his life to the absolute fullest. He loved hiking, family, Adirondacks, volunteering and anything math/engineer related. He was a kind and gentle person with a wonderful sense of humor and an irrepressible upbeat attitude. Having battled cancer 4 times you can imagine how hard it was to get the news that he had a disease that was going to take him from us within months and those coming months, he would never be the same.

Spring of 2023 Dad was having issues with disorientation and forgetfulness. He had a routine MRI for a cancer screening early summer that indicated CJD could be a cause for the behavior. He would then have EEG, blood work and multiple lumbar punctures to determine the likelihood of CJD. Families will not get a 100% diagnosis because the gold standard for CJD testing is during autopsy. There is an 85% chance of not knowing how someone gets CJD because it can lay dormant for decades. Luckily, Dad maintained his ever-present optimism through to end of his life. The weight this disease had on his loved ones was indescribable. Symptoms would change weekly and we felt like it was hard to come up for air while navigating what we knew were his last months with us.

We are raising money for this organization because we don't want anyone else to have to suffer the way Dad and his family did. Thanks so much for your consideration!!

About Strides for CJD

Strides for CJD is an annual walk/run to raise awareness of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a rare neurodegenerative disease that has no treatment or cure. Through this event, anyone -- anywhere -- can pay tribute to their loved ones and raise funds for the CJD Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

Funds raised support our programs including:

  • Our 24/7 helpline, support groups, conference, and other family programs throughout the year.
  • Research grants to help scientists make important discoveries and bring us closer to a cure.
  • Medical education to help raise awareness and understanding of prion disease.
