Join Team Queso in the Fight Against CJD
Almost three years ago, I lost my husband, Chuck, to genetic Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD) just fifty-seven days after demonstrating his first sympton. It all began on September 10, 2022, when Chuck mentioned he was having trouble hearing, especially female voices. Initially, he was misdiagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis and later Myasthenia Gravis, receiving extensive treatment for both conditions. It wasn’t until October 29 that he was finally diagnosed with CJD at the Mayo Clinic. Tragically, just a week later, he passed away from this devastating disease. Chuck inherited this illness, as his mother had also succumbed to genetic CJD in 2004, creating a painful legacy in our family.
CJD is a rare and fatal brain disorder affecting around 500 people annually in the U.S., with no known cure. This underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and funding to support research for effective treatments and a cure, as well as to improve understanding among healthcare professionals.
Chuck was a remarkable individual, embodying integrity, resilience, courage, and love in every aspect of his life. He proudly served as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and Intelligence Specialist in the U.S. Navy for 28 years, earning a Bronze Star for his exemplary service. As a mentor to countless sailors, he inspired innovation and encouraged career advancement. He also had a great career in the civilian world, where he spent over 30 years, including nine years at JPMorgan Chase, continuing to lead with the same principles that defined his Navy career.
In honoring Chuck's legacy, I established **Team Queso**. His character continues to guide our mission to raise awareness and offer support for families facing this devastating disease.
Your donations to the CJD Foundation will not only aid researchers in their quest for a cure but also provide vital resources and support to families grappling with the challenges of CJD. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in the fight against this disease.
Today, I invite you to stand with me and join Team Queso.
Will you join us in making a difference and standing up against CJD?
Thank you for your support!

About Strides for CJD
Strides for CJD is an annual walk/run to raise awareness of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a rare neurodegenerative disease that has no treatment or cure. Through this event, anyone -- anywhere -- can pay tribute to their loved ones and raise funds for the CJD Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
Funds raised support our programs including:
- Our 24/7 helpline, support groups, conference, and other family programs throughout the year.
- Research grants to help scientists make important discoveries and bring us closer to a cure.
- Medical education to help raise awareness and understanding of prion disease.
