From Bucket List to Finish Line (Hopefully!)

I'm raising money for Soccer Without Borders

Moving to New York was always on my life bucket list - and not long ago, I celebrated my first year in this incredible, chaotic, inspiring city. So when it came to ticking off another life goal - running a marathon - what better choice than the most iconic one in the world?

Tactically (and vainly) timed to get me into shape for my best friend's wedding in September, I set my sights on the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon. I’d watched it last year as a spectator, and wow - what a day. Friends, colleagues, strangers - all pounding the pavement, cheered on by the most amazing crowd. Especially in Brooklyn, where it felt more like a street party than a race. I remember thinking: “Imagine running through this.”

I tried the marathon ballot with no luck. So I decided to use this goal to do some good and run for a charity that meant something to me. Since it was work that brought me to New York, I wanted a cause that connected both worlds - my job and my journey. I started looking into football (soccer)-based charities and found Soccer Without Borders. A cause that’s using the beautiful game to break barriers, open doors, and change lives. Not only do they do fantastic work around the States, they also have programs in Africa. As someone who was born in Africa (fun fact!) and has worked in football my entire career, their mission hit home.

I sent off my application with hope and anticipation and to my delight I heard back from Murial - a wonderful Coordinator for the charity. We spoke a couple of days later and her passion for her work and the charity was infectious. I knew immediately: This is my team. And to my delight, they agreed - I got the email saying 'Welcome to Team SWB at the NYC Marathon!' and let out a squeal in the office (sorry team).

I heard getting into the NY marathon wasn't easy but now that's ticked off, the actual hard work begins! I am absolutely terrified but determined to do myself, Soccer Without Borders and anyone who is kind enough to support me in any way proud.

People often say football is the most powerful vehicle for social change - and I truly believe that. It raises awareness, sparks dialogue, and drives real impact in communities around the world. I’ve seen that power first hand which is why I’m so thrilled to be supporting a charity that lives and breathes this mission every single day.

⚽️ How You Can Support:

  • Donate: Big, small, round number or awkward amount—every dollar helps.

  • Cheer Me On: Words of advice and encouragement are fuel for the long runs (and the sore legs).

  • Share My Page: Help spread the word so we can raise awareness and funds for an incredible cause.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading, supporting, and being part of this journey - it means the world to me!

Ginnie x

p.s. there is a strong likeliness marathon running will fully become my personality. I will talk about it constantly. I will share training updates no one asked for. I’m really sorry in advance.
