My Swift Story: The Green Shirt

Hello, future donors! My name is Kyle and this summer will mark my third year volunteering with the Swift Youth Foundation. Among the many keepsakes I have garnered from my time at Camp Swift, one holds a special place in my room (and heart). The green counselor shirt from last summer always occupies one of the first spots in my closet. Sure, it's a little inconvenient to always make sure this one shirt always shows, but I do it for a reason. Every time I see it, it brings back memories of camp. 

At night in the cabin, this was my sleep shirt, although that is a bit of an oxymoron. Every couple of hours I would be awakened by a succession of 11 year-olds, ostensibly needing to take a walk to the restroom. In fact, they just wanted to talk about things weighing heavily on their minds.This was never more true than on two occasions. One night, a camper’s necklace, given as a keepsake by his grandmother, led to an discussion about coping with her recent passing. Another time, a camper shared with me his private frustrations about his recent autism diagnosis, and we talked until he was able to fall back asleep. My slumberless nights at camp provided some of the most poignant moments I have ever experienced. I learned the obligations and rewards of being a role model while volunteering there. That's why I never let my shirt get washed away into the sea of my other gray, blue, and white t-shirts. The green will always show.

Donations and contributions are essential to making sure these camp memories can continue! That was just my Swift story, but many future campers and future counselors have yet to make theirs. Thanks to your help, we can ensure the perfect summer for our campers. Any contribution would be much appreciated. Thank you!
