I'm excited to share that I’ll be participating in the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on behalf of Opportunity International as a founding member of Team Opportunity -- an organization that holds a special place in my heart as I used to work there!
I was introduced to Opportunity International in 2009 when I participated in an Insights Trip to Tanzania and Rwanda. This was an incredibly transformational moment in my life, as seeing this type of poverty and the impact that microfinance could have was tremendous. I had been working as a financial advisor, had done pretty well out of college in this role, and decided I wanted to spend a year committed to a cause that had great personal meaning for me. So, from my hotel room in Rwanda, I put in my two weeks notice and asked if I could join the Opportunity International team. I would go on to spend the next year to year and a half of my life working as an unpaid intern/ analyst for the group before going back to school to get my MBA.
As you might know, I support Opportunity International because their mission means a lot to me. This mission, paired with my passion for running, made for the perfect match to take on a bold goal to raise money for Malawian women living on less than $1/day. Through my training and running this fall, I am working to help these women lift their families out of extreme poverty. With your support, women will receive resources to meet their immediate needs and empower them to start businesses, generate income, feed their families, and send their children to school.
