Running to make a difference

Dear Friends and Family, I hope this note finds you healthy and well as we all navigate the uncertainty that 2020 has brought us. Like everyone else, our family’s regular commitments came grinding to halt in March and social engagements started dropping off the calendar. At that point, I quickly realized I needed to find an outlet to keep me from going crazy (or keep me from driving my family crazy). Since COVID-19 is sidelining many of our summer activities, I have rekindled the desire (and time) to knock out a lifelong goal that for a long time I thought was out of reach. This September, I am going to attempt my first ever marathon! Unfortunately though, the Chicago Marathon (and every other road race) has been cancelled this fall. So with the help of some good friends, I will be attempting a marathon effort in late September meandering the bike baths of Naperville, and this marathon will affectionately be dubbed “The Full Nelson” (thank you Paul!). Unfortunately, like many situations COVID is having adverse financial ramifications on the Chicago Marathon and the sponsored charities that are dependent on Marathon participant fundraising. As I contemplated running a marathon, I knew I wanted it to have a larger significance than me completing the distance or hitting a certain time, so aligning these objectives, I have decided to run the “Full Nelson” for a charity called Erika’s Lighthouse, an organization dedicated to Depression awareness. As some of you know, my family lost my father seven years ago this September to depression. He was a bright light for many people during his life. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and spirituality. I could not be prouder of the man my father was, and the life he led in spite of it ending far too soon. Unfortunately, stigmas around mental health continue to be highly prevalent in our society and impact all age ranges in different ways. Erika’s Lighthouse is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to breaking down those stigmas around mental health and provides resources and support for adolescents struggling with depression. As the coronavirus continues to bear down on our nation, it is as critical as ever to support organizations like Erika’s Lighthouse as anxiety and depression issues continue to take their toll on our nation. Erika’s Lighthouse’s annual budget depends on a total of $100,000 of fundraising from its Chicago Marathon participating partners each year. Those funds could be in jeopardy this year with the Chicago Marathon cancellation, and so I intend to do my part in supporting Erika’s Lighthouse bridge that gap, and I graciously ask you to support that effort and help me raise $2,000 for this organization. I understand that COVID has impacted many of us financially, so I understand if you are not able to provide financial support. Please keep in mind that any level contribution will be greatly appreciated and will help facilitate a wonderful organization. Like this marathon, with the help of friends and family and in honor of my dad, WE intend to crush this goal and take a step toward bringing depression awareness into the light. I humbly thank you for your support and I wish you all love, strength, and peace. Please always remember to be kind, accepting, and supportive of one another. Sincerely, Tim Nelson

Erika's Lighthouse is determined to make sure no young person feels alone in their depression. We are dedicated to creating a community of empathy and education. We create middle school and high school teen depression awareness programs so educators and teens can create safe spaces to learn about depression, letting students know they are never alone, and there is somewhere to turn.
