Special Olympics Chicago/Special Children's Charities believe that connecting people through sports and physical activity can be instrumental in spreading a culture of inclusion, acceptance, and joy.
The Special Olympics organization and those that work for its mission hold a special place in my heart.
As many of you know, my brother Kenny was born severely mentally and physically handicapped. Kenny shaped my world view at a very young age including how we approach and treat others, and how simple kindness can go a long way in making the world a better place. Kenny was challenged his whole life, yet he always seemed to have a smile or a giggle ready as you can see by the last picture I took with him before his passing a few years ago.
I am running the Chicago Marathon in Kenny's memory. I am also running it in honor of all the individuals that dedicate their lives to helping those who have mental and physical handicaps. There were several special people along the way in Kenny's life that helped him face his challenges. I am forever grateful for their dedication.
Team Special Olympics Chicago is a group of runners dedicated to supporting thousands of Chicagoans with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and I am proud to be a member of this team.
