My uncle was born with developmental disabilities and was nonverbal his entire life. He lived in a home, and I never had the opportunity to meet him. I often think that, had Special Children’s Charities and the programs they provide been available to him, his life—and my chance to know him—would have looked very different.

Since 1969, Special Children’s Charities has been the driving force behind inclusion and empowerment for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Chicago. The organization transcends boundaries and redefines possibilities—serving as a symbol of empowerment and inclusivity within both the disability community and across all 77 neighborhoods of our city.

This year’s marathon is especially meaningful. It’s my 10th marathon—and hopefully my last! It’s also my second time running in support of Special Children’s Charities, formerly known as Special Olympics Chicago. The spirit of accomplishment, inclusion, and joy that defines the marathon is exactly what Special Children’s Charities brings to thousands of participants and families every year.
