About:

Hi, it’s Denise. I grew up in Edinburg, TX, and I’m now a senior at UT Austin, double majoring in Computer Science and Astronomy. This summer, I’m riding the Sierra route with Texas 4000! I am a firm believer that the best days start with a matcha latte and end with live music. I also love spending my days reading a good fiction book, enjoying a big bowl of phở, and learning new hobbies I’ll probably never master (that knitted sweater is still a work in progress). As a triathlete and avid traveler, I’m also always seeking new experiences which is why Texas 4000 felt like the perfect next adventure—one with a purpose far bigger than myself. This desire to make a difference has always been a core part of who I am. Whether it’s through peer mentorship, showing up for others, or simply being a source of support, I've consistently strived to have a positive impact—even if it’s just for one person. Texas 4000’s mission of spreading hope, knowledge, and charity resonates deeply with me, and I’m honored to ride for those who can’t. No matter how small the impact may seem, I want my actions to reflect kindness, resilience, and the desire to leave the world a little better than I found it.

Why I Ride

When asked about participating in Texas 4000, there was never any hesitation. I am honored to be a part of something bigger than myself, impact countless lives, and ride for Tia Tommie.

I ride for my Tia Tommie — who unknowingly instilled in me a love of reading, an obsession with frozen chicken nuggets and fries, and unwavering faith in myself. As daunting as biking four thousand miles may seem, she would have been my biggest cheerleader, believing in me even if I didn't believe in myself. Her love knew no bounds, despite the relentless disease that took her.

I ride for my dog, Charlie, who got cancer last year. My best friend did not make it to see me at the finish line, but I know he will be running beside me the whole ride. I ride for my dad. Seeing him cross finish lines and hearing stories about his insane races makes me hope that one day I can live up to his legacy. I ride for my oldest sister who was on the 2021 team, and due to covid did not get to cross the finish line in Alaska. I'm making it for both of us, yaya.

I ride for anyone who has been affected directly or indirectly by cancer. The prospect of biking four thousand miles pales in comparison to the impact it could make in the lives of those touched by cancer. If you would like me to ride in memory of a lost family member or friend due to cancer, I would be more than honored to do so. I will ride not only for their memory, but also for the love they brought into this world.

I ride for my 2025 team, who are brave enough to bike across the country to impact lives and spread awareness and hope throughout the country.

To Alaska and back,

Denise
