I love a challenge. As a first-generation college graduate who was born and raised in Nepal and moved to the US as a teenager, I’ve navigated major life transitions and learned how to be adaptable in the face of adversity.
This April, I’m taking on my biggest challenge yet: trekking through the Himalayas to Everest Base Camp as part of the Timmerman Traverse. This journey is about much more than reaching 18,000 feet—it’s about raising $50,000 for the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, an organization that funds bold and innovative scientists tackling cancer in groundbreaking ways.
Giving back has always been my ethos—it’s where I find the most joy, whether it’s through my work or personal endeavors. I’m proud to work in Corporate Responsibility at Alnylam, and thrilled that for the first time, Alnylam will be sponsoring an employee - that’s me! - to participate in the Timmerman Traverse. Alnylam’s support of this trek reflects our shared commitment to making a difference and giving back to communities worldwide.
My homeland of Nepal is known for its majestic mountains and the iconic trail to Everest Base Camp. Growing up, I often heard stories about this storied trek, but I never imagined I’d one day take it on myself. Whenever I tell people I am from Nepal, their first question is always: “Have you been to Mount Everest?” My answer has always been no—until now.
For me, this is more than just a trek; it’s a full-circle moment. My parents are from rural parts of Gorkha, Nepal, and my upbringing gave me a strong connection to nature and the mountains. While I’ve hiked in Nepal before, nothing compares to the magnitude of this journey. Returning to my homeland for this expedition is deeply personal—not just because of the trek itself, but because it allows me to give back while challenging myself in new ways.
The trek won’t be easy. Over eight days, I’ll climb for hours each day, navigating steep trails and battling high-altitude conditions where oxygen is half that of sea level. But challenges like these have shaped my life. I’ve had to adapt, grow, and persist, and I’m ready to take on this climb with the same determination. Supporting the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation resonates with me because their work embodies boldness, perseverance, and the drive to make a difference.
But this journey isn’t just mine, it’s ours. By supporting my trek, you’re becoming part of something bigger. Together, we can make a difference for the millions of people impacted by cancer and their families.
My goal is to raise $50,000 for this incredible cause, and I can’t do it without your help. Please consider donating to help me crush this goal. If you’re interested in making a larger contribution, becoming a sponsor, or have any questions, feel free to reach out to me directly—I’d love to connect with you.
Thank you for being part of this mission. Your generosity means the world to me and to those whose lives we’re striving to change. Let’s climb new heights together—not just in the mountains, but in the fight against cancer.
