Mothers cannot give from a depleted source. Every mother needs emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual validation, nourishment, and support. When a mother is respected and well cared for, she and her whole family, will benefit. - MotherWoman
As an advocate for youth, women, and reproductive health, the mission of New Moms Chicago means a lot to me.
In my years as a youth librarian and mentor, I've met countless young women who wanted nothing more than to become the best women and mothers they could, but felt limited by their circumstances. What New Moms provides, by way of parenting support groups, job training and placement, and a safe supportive community, allows these women to not only break cycles of poverty, but create new standards for themselves and their families.
As a reproductive health advocate, I also believe in the importance of teaching women to advocate for themselvews and their healthcare. By providing reproductive health education and access to services such axs doulas, New Moms helps to empower young women to become active participants in their own healthcare and that of their children.
Each of these things, when put together, create stability, which is vital for us to thrive in a system designed to see us fail. When I think of New Moms, I think of my sister, who had her first daughter at 16. With the love and support of family, she was able to thrive, grow, and develop into an amazing mother, but for some young women, that support is not available. That's where New Moms comes in.
