I'm a big supporter of many causes, but women's education and opportunities are my soft spot. I remember the day I first heard about New Moms, their mission and their programs. We have been loyal supporters of the Lower Eastside Girls' Club in NYC for years, and after moving to Oak Park, I looked for a similar organization. One that worked to educate and support at risk young women, to develop their strengths and skills, and provide a foundation for growth. Imagine the goosebumps as I listened to the story of New Moms, about their support for young mothers, some of them almost children themselves. I learned how a two generation approach is used to construct a foundation for well-being by strengthening core life skills, incorporating early childhood development supports, and building pathways to and preparation for education and employment.
Later I visited the New Moms Chicago residential building and saw the fun, brightly colored apartments and sunlit hallways and playgrounds. I felt the sense of community and support these women and their children give each other as they develop as loving and secure families. I toured the Bright Endeavors candle factory and learned how creating an internal job training program gave New Moms the ability to help new mothers develop their professional skills and navigate every day challenges (such as arranging childcare, showing up to work on time) in a safe, supportive environment.
I am so impressed by the programs and opportunities offered by New Moms, and I'd love your support of this very special project during a challenging time. Now more than ever, we need to help our neighbors, and by helping them with programs such as New Moms, we all grow safer and stronger. Every dollar counts, so please help as you can.
Thank you!
