Crash Story:
On January 4, 2022, Angela Sims-Fuelling’s life was forever changed when her husband, Jim, was tragically killed in a preventable truck crash. Jim was a passenger in a work pickup truck that was at a standstill in construction traffic on I-85 heading north toward Charlotte. A semi-tractor trailer, traveling at 55 miles per hour, struck their vehicle from behind without ever braking. The crash killed Jim instantly and injured his coworker, Mike. Despite the catastrophic outcome, the truck driver was merely charged with “driving too fast for conditions” and faced no significant consequences beyond a fine.
Known affectionately as “Big Jim,” he was a gentle giant with a kind heart. Standing 6’6” tall, Jim was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether to friends, family, or strangers. Angela recalls how every morning Jim kissed her goodbye, saying “I love you,” a cherished memory from the last day she saw him alive.
Jim loved camping, NASCAR races, playing darts, pool, and cornhole. He had plans to retire and travel the U.S. with Angela in their fifth wheel camper. He also had a passion for giving back, volunteering for the Haunted Forest at their campground, where proceeds supported Lymphoma and Leukemia research. His absence leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Relationship/Involvement with TSC:
Angela joined the Truck Safety Coalition (TSC) in 2024 as a way to honor Jim’s memory and advocate for stronger safety regulations. This is Angela’s first volunteer activity with TSC, and she is committed to contributing to its mission of preventing truck crash tragedies and supporting families affected by these preventable losses.
Why Supporting TSC Matters:
“Joining TSC has given me a purpose in the wake of losing Jim. Advocating for safer roads ensures that others don’t have to endure the heartbreak that my family and I have faced. This is my way of honoring Jim’s memory and helping to create a future where preventable crashes no longer take lives.” - Angela Sims-Fuelling
As a new community member, Angela brings a fresh voice and deep dedication to her role, channeling her grief into meaningful action and helping build a safer world for all.
