Why We're Walking
We are walking in honor of Amy's mother, Sharon Slanchik, who fought Parkinson's Disease with positivity and tenacity for nearly 10 years. Sharon loved to exercise, and walked every day until she couldn't. When Parkinson's began to severely impact her ability to move, Sharon remained diligent about exercising by getting on her stationary bike at home every day. Sharon was a wife, mother, sister, daughter, niece, aunt and school teacher. She found every chance she could to write poems, enjoyed playing her piano, being in nature, and sharing her faith with others. She passed away in 2022 at the age of 63. While she lived in Wisconsin, Amy lives in Oklahoma and wants to support the Oklahoma Parkinson's Alliance however she can.
We are also walking in honor of Kristen Weaver’s aunt Eileen Geary, who passed away from Multiple Systems Atrophy (very similar to Parkinson's) earlier this year. Eileen was a mother, sister and doting aunt who was passionate about traveling, exercise, and helping people. She was an optimist who treated everyone she met with kindness and gentleness. She spent nearly a decade of her life battling MSA, and her faith never wavered. We are doing this walk also for Eileen and other people like her with Parkinson's and similar diseases.
Please consider donating to help the lives of Oklahomans living with Parkinson's.
