“Animals are here with us, not for us.”

On November 9, I will be going voiceless for animals.

Animals in this country are in a dire situation. While most people love animals and believe they should be protected, in Canada, our laws are so weak that most animals are unprotected from heartbreaking cruelty and abuse. In fact, our animal protection laws right now are some of the worst in the western world. Many people are shocked to learn that there are no federal regulations protecting animals on farms, or in laboratories, that it’s still legal to import and sell cat and dog fur, trophy hunting parts, and ivory. In Canada, you can even kill and eat your own pet.

Canada’s Parliament historically shut down any attempt to bring our animal laws in the 21st century, because of close ties with hunting and farming groups.

But this year, something changed. With the help of advocates, and groups like Animal Justice, Parliament actually passed three new animals protection bills! This is the first time since the 1800s that Canada’s government passed any new serious animal protection legislation.

I believe that legal change for animals is possible, and I think it’s vital to advancing this movement of compassion. And that’s why I believe in our mission at Animal Justice: to completely overhaul Canada’s legal and political systems to give animals the legal protections they desperately need.
