Hello friends! This is my second year participating in #Voiceless4AnimalJustice. As President of the TRU Law Animal Justice Student Chapter, I will be going silent once again for a whole day (!) to raise awareness about how nonhuman animal voices are silenced in our legal system, and to support the critical work of Animal Justice. This year, I will be joined by a number of other members of TRU Law Animal Justice! Please consider donating and supporting this campaign- it would mean the world to me.
When I was just a little girl I saw poor Lucy the elephant in the Edmonton Valley Zoo, and I loved her right away, but something in me stirred, and I knew deep down that our relationship with nonhuman animals was troubling. I felt deep in my heart that we are all important, that all creatures great and small matter, and that human lives and human desires should not be routinely held up and prioritized over the lives of others, especially when it results in unbelievable violence towards some of the most vulnerable in our society.
The law is meant to be the great equalizer, to uphold justice and fairness, yet nonhuman animals are systemically ignored and violently oppressed in our modern legal system. Canadian law is lagging vastly behind the minds and hearts of citizens, and must catch up to modern values. The time is now for organizations like Animal Justice to push for more legal protections, rights, and opportunities for nonhuman animals, but they cannot do this without our support.
