Location: Check-in begins at 9:00 AM in Foley Square at Lafayette and Duane Streets. The 3- mile Walk begins at 10:00 AM and will travel through lower Manhattan, over the Brooklyn Bridge and back again.
Sponsored by United Healthcare, this year's Walk once again honors the memory of Michael Scott. Mike passed away unexpectedly in September of 2013 at the age of 43 from a pulmonary embolism (PE), the result of an undetected blood clot, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in his leg which traveled to his lungs. Mike was suffering from health problems related to the blood clot for six months. He went from doctor to doctor trying to get answers but no one could find the cause. Mike’s family believes that if more information on dangerous blood clots were available, his would have been detected and his life could have been saved.
Mike was a kind and generous spirit who meant so much to so many people. He was the anchor of his family – his mother, sister and niece -- and his extended family. Coming from a large family, Mike was everyone’s favorite cousin. He cultivated many friendships over a 20-year career at ABC News, where his passion for story-telling led him to produce several news and sports pieces. He was also a mentor for his younger co-workers, always offering encouragement and advice. He was a fierce athlete — part of the City Champion Relay team at Cardinal Spellman High School and ran at Fordham University where he earned a track scholarship. He continued to run races and half marathons in his spare time, and took up the sport of boxing which he loved, training with and fighting for Trinity Gym, a NYC boxing gym. More than anything else, he loved his family and friends, always there to lend a helping hand. He was passionate about volunteering, a trait he inherited from his mother. He volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, for the Science Genius program in NYC high schools, and many other causes through Disney’s volunteer team.
Mike was one of those rare people who truly touched the lives of everyone he befriended. His kind, compassionate, giving nature drew people to him, as well as his zest for life, his great sense of humor, and his ability to connect with people. He was the center of life and love for his family, friends, and co-workers.
Mike’s sister Lisa has become an advocate for the National Blood Clot Alliance, raising awareness to prevent other families from going through what her family has been through. Walkers will travel across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn, to connect the boroughs in which Mike worked, lived and thrived.
