Last October, I suffered from a submassive bilateral Pulmonary Embolism (translation: I had blood clots on both of my lungs - large enough to cause some strain on my heart). I had extreme shortness of breath and went to Urgent Care to figure out what was happening.
After a trip to the ER, a catheter procedure and 4 days in the ICU, I was back on my feet and after a couple of weeks, back to normal activity. I still had blood clots in my left leg that the doctors said would hopefully go away over time as I took daily blood thinner medication and wore compression stockings.
In early May, I went in for my 6 month follow up and got the all clear! No clots in my leg and I don't need to take any more blood thinners!!
It's been a long road to feeling normal and I'm still dealing with some minor PTSD from that week in October. It's been hard to grasp that if my body hadn't given me that warning sign and if I had not gone to get checked out, I may not be here today. I was one of the lucky ones.
So- to celebrate a small victory with my health but to honor those who were not as lucky- I'm participating in The 2018 Walk to Stop the Clot NYC on Saturday, June 2nd. The walk is in honor of Michael Scott who worked with an old colleague of mine and sadly lost his life all too soon to a blood clot.
Any donations to help raise awareness for the National Blood Clot Alliance are most appreciated! And please let me know if you want to join me on the walk!
Thanks everyone!
