In life, as in sailing, we all face moments when the seas get rough and the destination seems uncertain. For families navigating the profound challenges of a life-limiting illness, this journey can feel overwhelming, filled with fear and uncertainty. The deepest desire in these moments is for peace, comfort, and dignity for the ones we love. But what happens when a family cannot afford the cost of that peace? This is a question no one should have to ask.

Fortunately, in our community, there is a beacon of hope: Hospice of the Upstate. For over 30 years, they have been the guide for families in this difficult passage. Founded by a small group of volunteers with a vision, they have grown into an incredible organization with a 32-bed facility, the Rainey Hospice House, serving nearly 1,000 patients and their families across seven counties each year. They offer more than just medical attention; they provide a circle of support that includes emotional, spiritual, and social care, wrapping families in a blanket of compassion.

Their most profound promise is this: no one is ever turned away because of an inability to pay. They believe that dignity in dying is a fundamental human right, not a luxury. This is where they need our help.

As a competitive sailor, I thrive on challenge and the pursuit of excellence. This year, as I race in the Force 5 North American Championships, I’m channeling that passion into a greater purpose. My career in manufacturing is built on the principle of making complex systems work for people. I see the same ethos at Hospice of the Upstate. They have built a seamless, compassionate system of care that puts people first, ensuring every individual’s final chapter is written with respect and love.
