In 2018, at age 47, breast cancer became part of my story.

Although I was aware of my genetic risk, I was still devastated when the diagnosis came. I was stepping into what I thought would be a new chapter, embracing life as an empty nester, exploring new possibilities, and enjoying the freedom that comes with that season. Instead, I was facing surgeries, uncertainty, and the emotional weight that only someone who has walked this road truly understands.

One of the most important lessons from my journey was this: speak up when something doesn’t feel right. My initial mammogram showed normal results — but my body and my inner voice told a different story. Trusting that instinct ultimately changed my life.

Why This Is Personal

I am a Survivor — and I have also lost close family members and friends to this disease.

Even when surrounded by love, a breast cancer diagnosis can feel isolating. It permanently reshapes your outlook on life. During some of my most difficult days recovering from extensive surgeries, I found comfort in the care packages I received from Carolina Breast Friends while I was in the hospital. Those small acts of kindness carried big meaning.

Carolina Breast Friends provides more than programs.  They provide community grounded in empathy, understanding, and shared experience.

I am doing this for every woman facing breast cancer alone.

If you are newly diagnosed, in treatment, in remission, or supporting someone you love — you are not alone. Community changes everything.

A Little About Me

I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and later migrated to New Jersey before settling in Charlotte 10 years ago. I’ve spent more than 36 years in the banking industry and currently work in the corporate sector (and, yes! I will absolutely encourage employer-matching gifts!).

I am the proud mother of two amazing adult children. I’m a social worker by nature and currently pursuing my Master’s in Social Work — because serving others has always been part of who I am.

When I’m not volunteering or studying, you’ll find me:

  • Walking through Uptown
  • Running the Greenway
  • Brunching with friends
  • Networking around Charlotte
  • At church
  • Or on the golf course (with pink golf balls, of course!)

Golf has become one of my favorite outlets, and once cleared by a medical professional, I highly recommend it for Survivors.

Fun fact: I am afraid of birds… so let’s hope none of those flying creatures land on my wig this April!

Why I’m Wiggin’ Out

By nature, I am a low-key person. I prefer to quietly support and uplift others. Becoming a Big Wig intentionally pushes me beyond my comfort zone — and may even awaken a competitive side.

This campaign allows me to use my voice in a bigger way.

It’s an opportunity to:

  • Advocate for Survivors and Thrivers
  • Raise awareness
  • Build meaningful community
  • And stretch myself as a leader

If this year is about using our superpower for good, then mine is courage rooted in compassion.

Breast cancer permanently changed my life — but it did not define my future. Now, I choose to live intentionally, courageously, and with purpose.

Thank you for supporting this mission.
Thank you for supporting Survivors and Thrivers.
And thank you for helping me Wig Out for a cause that truly changes lives.

Donate today and help ensure no one faces breast cancer alone.
