Melissa Martin

Hi, I’m Melissa. ♥︎

I’m a globally trained floral designer, event producer, and founder of Proper Flower, Charlotte’s premier floral design studio. After spending years producing luxury events around the world, from Tokyo to Tulum, Provence to Cartagena, as part of the renowned Matthew Robbins Design team in New York City, I returned home in 2015 to launch Proper Flower here in Charlotte.

Today, my work spans weddings, interiors, editorial, and experiential events, and has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, The Knot, Sweet Paul, and beyond. But at the heart of everything I design is intention — creating beauty that feels meaningful, immersive, and lasting.

When I’m not designing florals, I’m a wilderness girl at heart. I forage. I study rocks and artifacts. I document the night sky (every single night for nearly three years now). I find joy in the woods, in wonder, in nature, and in inspiring others to reconnect with the earth.

Design is my profession. Wonder is my way of life.

Why This Cause Is Personal

Breast cancer has touched my life in profound ways.

My Nana, Gladys Cyphers, my angel, my warrior,  is a survivor.
My beautiful mom, Sandy Martin, is also a survivor.

When my mom was diagnosed at the beginning of COVID, I was navigating my own health scare and had just started my business without insurance. Carolina Breast Friends stepped in and arranged for me to receive a mammogram. When I went to check out, I learned that an anonymous angel had covered the entire cost.

I was absolutely blown away by that kindness.

When my mom began losing her hair, The Pink House invited us in to try on wigs, and she left with three. They transformed a heartbreaking moment into one filled with lightness, laughter, and dignity.

The Pink House showed up for my family and me.
And now, I show up for them.

For the past six years, I’ve supported Carolina Breast Friends by sharing my floral artistry at galas and events to help raise awareness for this incredible organization. I’m also currently working to create a Garden Program with The Pink House—a reflective space where people can honor loved ones affected by breast cancer and find healing in nature.

What Being a Big Wig Means to Me

I believe we are each given gifts and we are meant to share them freely.

If each of us used our gifts to lift others up, we could change the world.

Being a Big Wig means using my creativity, my voice, my community, and yes, my pink wig, to raise awareness and funds so Carolina Breast Friends can continue being a light for women and families during their hardest seasons.

This is about joy.
This is about community.
This is about showing up with love.

Where You’ll See Me in My Pink Wig

Everywhere.

At Proper Flower events. On deliveries. At weddings. At workshops. In the woods. At conferences. Possibly convincing my entire team to wear pink wigs with me!

We plan to create a buzz all over Charlotte and beyond.

My Fundraising Plans

We’re going BIG.

  • An epic dance party.
  • Hands-on floral workshops.
  • Collaborations with fellow small business owners.
  • Social media takeovers (my younger team members are on it!).

We’re blending fun, positivity, community, and creativity to create real impact.

A Fun Fact

I’m a Charlotte native — Providence High School Class of 1999… and yes, I was Homecoming Queen. ♛ (Go Panthers!)

I’ve also launched an internship program with Providence’s horticulture department, giving students hands-on experience growing and maintaining plants as part of their education. Supporting the next generation is something I care deeply about.
