This year my Dad told me that he didn't want anything for his birthday.  "Do not get me anything, I have enough and I don't need a thing".  The great thing about this is that he is right.  Another great thing about my Dad is that he understands this and tries to help others. Since he retired to Florida he has dedicated the bulk of his time to supporting his fellow veterans.  He started by going to his local VFW post to connect with others.  He got more involved, constantly preparing and making meals and building relationships.  He became Post Commander and worked to create an environment that continued to bring more veterans in and together they worked to bring needed improvements to the post. He eventually took this mission on the road to connect with other posts.  He became District Commander and Senior District Vice, always focused on providing space that ensures comradery, support and resources for all veterans.  

Well.....sorry Dad, but I am getting you something for your birthday.  It just so happens that the Winter Walk in Boston whose mission is to support organizations focused on prevention, support, and care for the homeless community takes place this year on your birthday.  One of the organizations that will receive funding through this walk is the New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV) , a phenomenal organization that I have been fortunate enough to be introduced to through our community efforts at work. So on February 11th I will be walking in support of veterans, your efforts and the efforts of everyone involved with the NECHV.  Happy Birthday Dad!
