Help me support NextStep Orlando!
Hi Everyone,
It's that time again! This will be my 2nd NextStep Orlando Red Carpet Event. Thank you to everyone that donated to my page last year and for your supportive messages. I was able to return to NextStep for a few months of training this summer because of your generosity. My body is so much stronger but I still have a ways to go. So again this year, I am raising money to continue my recovery from a undiagnosed rare Basilar Artery Aneurysm on my brain stem resulting in 2 strokes that left me in a wheelchair and completely motionless in 2014 at the age of 10. After my surgery I could not talk, eat, drink or move. It is like I was trapped in my body. I had so much to say and couldn't say it. All I could do is move one of my eyes. One of my surgeons said since I survived 72 hours after surgery that I should make a full recovery but it will take years of therapy and to expect 2 steps forward and 1 step back. I spent several months in inpatient therapy with several years in outpatient therapy 2x per week and now outpatient therapy has reduced to 1 visit per week. During one of my inpatient stays, I found out I had scoliosis and had to have my spine fused. But, no matter what life dishes out, I punch it in the face and carry on because I have a future calling my name. I used to be an avid softball pitcher and a 1st base player on a local team. I was also a dancer, gymnast, singer, and Kiwanis k-kid and enjoyed helping out in my community.
Over the past few years I have slowly regained some of my motor skills back. I found NextStep Orlando and travel to Florida several times just to come to NextStep for activity based training. They work differently than physical therapy. They train with me everyday and I work very hard to regain my independence. I can push myself up to stand from my chair but still need to continue working on my balance. I am working really hard to walk again. My left arm continues to regain movement. I am talking more now that my voice is stronger(thanks to my Speech Therapist back home) and to the staff and trainers at NexStep for making me talk to them during my sessions. I have met several new best friends here with the clients and staff. It makes me so happy to see them every time I go and they keep me smiling and laughing❤️ Thank you in advance!
The 13th Annual Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon, benefitting NextStep Orlando, will be held at 9a.m. Saturday, October 29th 2022 at Crane's Roost Park in Altamonte Springs. The Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon is held to raise awareness and funds for paralysis recovery!

About NextStep Orlando
They told us to accept what we couldn’t change. Instead, we changed what we couldn’t accept.
"On April 21, 2007, I received the phone call no parent is ever prepared for. I was told my only daughter, Amanda, was being airlifted to a nearby hospital after a serious car accident. As I raced to the hospital, I could only think one thing: Please, let her be alive.
Once there, I learned Amanda’s friend had fallen asleep at the wheel, hit a traffic light pole and careened down an embankment. My 18 year old daughter, asleep in the passenger seat, became a human missile within the car. I was informed her neck was broken and she was paralyzed. According to her doctors, Amanda would never walk again.
Immediately, desperate panic for my child clawed at me, followed by feelings of confusion, anger, sorrow and uncertainty. I went from having an active, well-adjusted daughter who loved her family, friends and participating in dance, to a battered, bed-ridden daughter, unable to sit up, feed herself or be in control of her bowel or bladder function. From her bedside in the hospital, I vowed to fight for my child’s recovery. In the days and weeks that followed, Amanda was fitted for a wheelchair. We were informed our goals for regaining Amanda’s independence and complete mobility were unrealistic. We searched out what we felt was the best program in the world for those like Amanda and flew across the country. She made miraculous progress in the program, only to have our insurance limit reached too soon. She still has much work ahead of her.
This horrible reality is similarly faced by over 11,000 families each year. There are very few options for recovery, especially in Florida. A person living with a spinal cord injury is overwhelmed. They need recovery, hope, encouragement and a reason to wake up every day.
This is why we founded NextStep Orlando. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to help those suffering with a spinal cord injury (SCI) improve their daily living – by regaining function and perhaps, even walking again.
Thank you for your support as we continue to give individuals Hope."
Sincerely,
Liza Perla-Riedel Founder/Facility Director
