Ani and I have been living and working together since we first met at Philadelphia International Airport in August 1990. Ani had already been a coworker at Beaver Run for a year, and she came to pick me up when I arrived as a Camphill School volunteer. It didn't take long before we had both fallen in love with each other and with Camphill. Our life since has been an amazing journey of friendship and community. We have lived with hundreds of students and coworkers, celebrating festivals, graduations, weddings and births at their side. We have learned and grown from the learning.

Ani and I watched our own two boys grow up here, and our delight now lies in watching a new generation of coworkers learn the ropes as they bring their children into the world, celebrating our shared life together. We know that this is a tender place, where service, gentleness and kindness are seen as the highest values in a world of competition, fortitude and individualism. That The Camphill School is here at all is a  miracle, and one worth protecting and nourishing.

Our community, if it is a stucture, if it is a place, is a heart structure, a heart space. The intersection of our lives creates the mood and the landscape here. The slow and steady growth of our knowledge of each other, and of being known by one another, is how we create home. Children with intellectual disabilities thrive in this quiet and measured process of community building. Because of this our children with special needs have always inspired The Camphill School community to be a heart that shines with light, warmth and love.
