Our journey began in 2016. We always knew C.J. a.ka. "Professor C.J." was special. He wasn't interested in the things most children his age were and was an extreme extrovert. C.J. didn't like stickers, any crunchy foods, and love soft materials. Physical Education was a challenge for him and he was very awkward in participating in any type of sports. His love and focus was predominately academics. Sensitive to sounds and ordinary tasks like flushing toilets or the sounds from the shower would send him running.
It was suggested by a subject matter expert that we have him assessed. As "Professor C.J." held a preliminary highly intellectual discussion with the doctor, he corrected her in some of her statements. After the written assessments, the doctor formally diagnosed Professor "C.J." with High Functioning Autism, or Asperger Syndrome. Fifth grade and age 10, I am convinced that his teacher at the time, Mrs. Tenisea Higgins, was the wind beneath our wings and helped us to understand how to approach his daily needs and access resources to help C.J. develop personal and socially. I am forever grateful to her and am honored to join forces with her.
It is a challenging journey, some days feeling more like hiking a mountain, while others feel like a "walk in the park". We are grateful for the many family, friends, and resources we've been guided to since his diagnosis. We will continue to need support as we empower C.J. in becoming a successful and happy adult.
